WHAT IS READMISSION?

Eligibility for readmission applies to you if you were a former UNC Charlotte degree-seeking, undergraduate student who is now looking to re-enroll in Charlotte and: 

  • Have not been enrolled for 12 consecutive months, following your last attendance term at Charlotte;
    • Example: You attended the spring 2020 semester and did not enroll by the spring 2021 semester
  • Were previously dismissed from Charlotte due to an academic suspension or disciplinary suspension;
  • Were a previous degree-seeking student who transferred out of Charlotte and:
    • Did not complete a degree elsewhere; or 
    • Earned your first bachelor’s degree at another institution and now want to return to Charlotte to pursue another undergraduate program of study; or
  • Earned your first degree at Charlotte and would like to return to pursue a minor, second major or second degree.
WHAT IF I EARN A BACHELOR’S DEGREE AND WANT TO TAKE CLASSES FOR PERSONAL ENRICHMENT, AS A PRE-REQUISITE TO A GRADUATE PROGRAM OR FOR OTHER NON-DEGREE SEEKING REASONS?

Post-baccalaureate or non-degree admission is a pathway for you to take a graduate class and return to school quickly, without having to take an admissions test, complete prerequisites, or commit to a specific program.  Whether for personal enrichment to brush up on your French for an upcoming trip, earn continuing education credit for your job, or see if Data Science is the new career for you, enrolling as a post-baccalaureate student is a simple process.  Additionally, students seeking to take courses beyond the baccalaureate degree for transfer to another institution, or as prerequisites for admission to a graduate degree program, may enroll as a post-baccalaureate. You can apply as a post-baccalaureate student through Graduate Admissions.

WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS TO BE READMITTED?
  • You must be in a Good Academic Standing, with a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • The minimum admission criteria may be higher depending on the major/program you wish to pursue. Before making your selection, you may wish to view the readmission criteria for your program(s).
  • You may qualify for Readmission with Academic Forgiveness, if you have been away for 24 months or if you have earned a transferable associate’s degree during your time away from Charlotte. HOW DO I CHANGE MY READMISSION SEMESTER?

Your readmission approval is term specific. Your approved readmission to the university is pertinent to the semester for which you applied and are readmitted. If you choose not to enroll for the admitted term, please let us know by emailing readmission@charlotte.edu. You may reapply for a future term that you wish to attend.

WHAT IS SUMMER-ONLY READMISSION?
  • If you were placed on academic suspension or probation, Summer-Only Readmission is an opportunity that allows you to return to Charlotte as a non-degree seeking student. You will be allowed to take summer term classes in order to raise your cumulative GPA.
  • If you were academically suspended at the end of a spring semester, you may register for summer school classes. If you were suspended at the end of a fall semester you are eligible to apply as a Summer-Only readmission student.
  • Important Note: If you choose to take classes in the summer, the 24 consecutive month waiting period for academic forgiveness eligibility will start over at the conclusion of the summer term. Academic Forgiveness is not applied to Summer-Only readmission.

APPLYING FOR READMISSION

HOW DO I APPLY FOR READMISSION?
  • Apply for readmission by creating a Future 49er Account and submitting a readmission application.
  • Pay your non-refundable $75 application fee, along with your readmission application.
    • Students who qualify for the 49er Finish program will have their application fee waived. See the 49er Finish FAQs below to determine if you qualify. 
  • Submit an official transcript from each institution you have attended after your last term of attendance at Charlotte. Request that your previous college(s) submit official transcripts directly to UNC Charlotte. 
    • Electronic official transcripts will expedite your processing time and can be sent to transcripts@charlotte.edu
    • Paper official transcripts can be mailed to:

WHEN CAN I APPLY FOR READMISSION AFTER ACADEMIC SUSPENSION?

Students who were academically suspended from Charlotte may apply for readmission after a break in enrollment of a minimum of one full regular academic semester (fall or spring). 

  • If you were suspended at the end of a spring semester, you may be considered for readmission for the following spring semester. 
  • If you were suspended at the end of a fall semester, you may be considered for readmission as early as the subsequent summer term.
  • If you would like to attend the semester immediately following your academic suspension, you must have successfully appealed your academic suspension before the appeal deadline as noted on the Academic Calendar.
    • Students are notified of their option to appeal their suspension status and students who do not appeal or are denied an appeal could consider pursuing readmission for a future term (but not for the semester immediately following their suspension).

HOW DO I CHANGE THE MAJOR/MINOR/PROGRAM OF MY READMISSION?

You may apply for readmission into a different major than the one you were previously pursuing at Charlotte. To be considered for admission into a new program of study, select your new desired major when completing your application for readmission.

Competitive majors require additional review by the department. Your previous major may be a factor during the department’s review. Competitive majors include those housed within:

  • College of Arts + Architecture 
  • Belk College of Business 
  • William States Lee College of Engineering
  • College of Computing & Informatics
  • School of Nursing

If you desire to change your major after you have submitted your application for readmission but before your readmission application has been decided, please email Readmission with your change of major request at readmission@charlotte.edu

If you wish to change your major after you have been readmitted, contact your Academic Advisor or schedule an appointment with your department for next steps.

WHAT IS NEXT AFTER I SUBMIT MY APPLICATION?

Ensure you have submitted all required readmission application documentation. Applications will only be considered complete and ready for decision once all relevant materials are received by the University. Not submitting required documentation could delay application review.

Once your application is complete, continue monitoring your application portal for status updates on your application.

MY APPLICATION STATUS IS “INCOMPLETE” DUE TO MISSING TRANSCRIPTS. CAN I UPLOAD MY TRANSCRIPTS TO MY APPLICATION?

Yes. Submit an official transcript from each institution you have attended after your last term of attendance at Charlotte. Request that your previous college(s) submit official transcripts directly to Charlotte.

  • Electronic official transcripts will expedite your processing time and can be sent to transcripts@charlotte.edu.

HOW SOON WILL I RECEIVE MY READMISSION DECISION?

Each complete readmission application undergoes a thorough review. Review of your application may include safety, suspension, disciplinary, GPA, transcript, financial and departmental review. This is done to ensure your success upon your return.

Please allow four to six weeks for the reviewing of your application. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED OF MY READMISSION DECISION?

Once your readmission decision has been determined, you will be notified by email and within your application portal.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO ONCE I’M READMITTED?
  • First, congratulations and welcome back, Niner! 
  • Now that you’re admitted, it is a great time to reach out to Niner Central to discuss financial aid, residency determination and billing.
  • Connect with your academic advisor to begin selecting your classes.
    • You can find your academic advisor’s contact information on your degree audit in DegreeWorks, Charlotte’s degree audit system. DegreeWorks is accessible through your MyCharlotte account or via the Academic Advising website.
    • You can schedule an appointment with your advisor through Charlotte’s academic advising scheduling system, Connect.
WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO REGISTER?

After you connect with your academic advisor, you will be eligible to register for your courses. Your academic advisor will discuss your academic objectives, advise you on the best courses to take and clear you to register for courses.

ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS

WHAT IS ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS?
  • If you qualify for Academic Forgiveness, only those courses in which you received a grade of ‘C’ or higher will be used for academic credit.
    • Shortly after the term’s census date, during your first semester back, any courses in which you have received a grade below ‘C’ will be excluded from your earned credit hours and your academic GPA will be recalculated.
    • Your updated academic GPA will be based on previously earned grades of ‘A,’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ only so improvement to your academic GPA is certain.
  • Please Note:
    • You will lose credit from any course(s) in which you earned a ‘D’ and will be required to retake the course(s) if it is required for your degree progression. 
    • Readmission with Academic Forgiveness also resets your withdrawal credit hour limit back to the original 16 credit hours. 
    • Academic Forgiveness does not remove attempted hours.
    • Academic Forgiveness is an academic policy and does not apply to Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) calculations for financial aid.
HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS?
  • You qualify for Academic Forgiveness if you meet any one or more of the following criteria and to attend the semester in which you are readmitted:
    • Academic/disciplinary suspension with a break in enrollment from Charlotte for a minimum of one regular semester (fall or spring) and have earned a transferable associate’s degree [associate of arts (AA), associate of science (AS), associate of fine arts (AFA) or associate of engineering (AE)] during your time away from Charlotte. An official transcript, with the degree posted, will be required to complete your readmission application.
    • A break in enrollment from Charlotte for a minimum period of 12 consecutive months and have earned a transferable associate’s degree [associate of arts (AA), associate of science (AS), associate of fine arts (AFA) or associate of engineering (AE)] during your time away from Charlotte. An official transcript, with the degree posted, will be required to complete your readmission application.
    • A break in enrollment from Charlotte for a minimum period of 24 consecutive months. Use the forgiveness timeframe calculator to determine when you are eligible.
  • Students may be readmitted with Academic Forgiveness only one time under this policy.
  • Academic Forgiveness is only applicable to students earning their first undergraduate degree at Charlotte.
    • Academic Forgiveness cannot be applied to your first degree if it has been awarded at Charlotte.
WHEN WILL ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS BE APPLIED?
  • Academic Forgiveness is applied 7-10 business days after census in the semester you return to Charlotte. See the Academic Calendar for dates.
  • Once Academic Forgiveness has been applied, students will be notified via their University email.
MAY I DECLINE ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS?
  • Yes. Academic Forgiveness is automatically applied to all who qualify. However, you may request to opt-out of Academic Forgiveness by submitting an email to readmission@charlotte.edu on or before the last day to add/drop in the term in which you are returning (see Academic Calendar for dates).
  • After the add/drop period, students may request to opt-out of Academic Forgiveness by submitting an Academic Petition, selecting the petition type of “Waive Forgiveness Policy.”

49er FINISH

WHAT IS THE 49ER FINISH PROGRAM?

In partnership with the Office of Adult Students & Extended Services (OASES), the 49er Finish Program assists select former Charlotte students toward degree completion through personalized academic advising upon readmission.

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR THE 49ER FINISH PROGRAM?
  • To qualify for the 49er Finish Program, you must be a former Charlotte undergraduate student who:
    • Completed 90+ credit hours at Charlotte,
    • Have a 2.0 GPA or better,
    • Are in good academic, disciplinary and financial standing, and
    • Have not been enrolled at Charlotte for at least one year.
  • Returning students eligible for the 49er Finish will have their $75 readmission application fee waived.
